Hand Sculpture

For the Sign Language Hand Sculpture project, I chose the sign for the letter T, as it was the first letter of my last name and the first letter of the names of both my dogs. For the design, I chose mountains on the bottom to reflect the arctic tundra, for which one of my dogs was named after and the colour choice on the majority of the piece, the yellow with dry-brushed red, was for my other dog, Thor, as the god he was named after was historically known to wear those colours. Lastly, I traced a picture of a horse and transferred it onto the cast using chalk and then painted it in colours that would compliment the red and yellow. I started by drawing on the mountains and transferring the traced horse, once I had clean lines, I proceeded to paint the mountains, trying to use multiple shades of grey to give them some texture. I then painted the horse over in white and while that dried, I went over the entire piece with two similar shades of yellow, when that had dried, I took a bit of red and when I painted it on, the texture of the cast gave it a nice dry brush look. I mainly started the red on the mountain line and had it fade as it went up the hand. Finally it was time to paint the horse, mixing together red, yellow and black, I went over all the body in brown and then used black to clean any rough lines and finish off the piece. My original plan was to use a thunderbolt as a symbol for Thor and not include the horse at all, but as I was looking for some ideas to fill the blank spaces on the piece, I came across this series of drawing called Geometric Beasts, which I really loved, I felt they really captured the horse, so I used the top half of their horse image. If I had more time, I would just touch up the mountains and add some green in front of them to give you a different perspective.
